Job Description

An early stage Impact Venture Capital Fund the provides equity capital for high impact for-profit enterprises that serve the direct foundational needs of the South African economy. We make investments in specific impact themes which are fundamental to our impact thesis. LifeCo Ventures has a moderate risk appetite – with a clear investment objective to ensure an inflation-linked return across all investment categories, while augmenting the positive impact outcomes off all underlying investments.

Role Profile This is an exciting opportunity for an intern to join a small team in a new impact fund based in Johannesburg. As an impact fund we consider both financial return and social impact in our investment decisions meaning that we have a non-traditional approach to venture capital. The primary role of the intern is to support the team in preparing for the launch of the fund and through the first fund raising round.

Duration of internship 6 months (candidate should be able to commit to a minimum of 4 months uninterrupted work)

DUTIES

Supporting Investments Team • Administration tasks related to compliance and statutory requirements for the fund entity • Liaising with auditors, compliance consultants, and fund administrators to manage outstanding requirements • Coordinating internal activities related to the fund launch within the investments team and wider LifeCo group • Hands on ‘doing’ and coordinating of tasks related to investor roadshow e.g. ensuring marketing materials are printed, setting up for presentations, making sure investments team is ready for presentations • Minute taking and follow up for investor meetings and conference calls • Assist in preparing presentations • Manage social media for the investments team in liaison with public relations advisors

Research • Research related to the fundraising strategy and potential investors • Keep up-to-date with international trends, standards, and metrics in the impact investing industry

The Ideal Candidate

Education and Experience • Bachelor’s degree (ideal for a BCom graduate looking for work experience) • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint • Proficient with desktop research

Other Knowledge, Skills and Attributes • Career interest in investments, finance, consulting, entrepreneurship or social enterprise • Intellectually curious and ambitious • Detail-oriented, organised and unafraid to ask questions • Exceptional interpersonal skills and self-confidence • Comfortable working in a dynamic environment (role will not be a well-structured predictable 8-5 work day, requires someone with positive energy) • Comfortable with travel outside of Johannesburg as necessary
