Contract Senior Researcher/Honours Students

rentastudent Alberton, Gauteng, South Africa

Job Description

Holiday work for Honours’ students – sociology, economics or development candidates preferred.

As part of its preparations for an upcoming campaign to fight poverty, a prominent national government department needs help to unpack a series of reports on the incidence of poverty at district municipality and community levels.  (Who is most affected by what? Where, how and why? What remedies are available?)

The idea is to for a group of six researchers/honours’ students, operating from home and independently of one another, to each tackle part of this task, working their way through information supplied, (electronically) to each compile a series of reports, to an agreed format, over six weeks, commencing Dec 6th and ending January 16th, breaking only for Dec 25th and 26th, and Jan. 1. There will be a briefing meeting at the start, a monitoring meeting towards the middle of the period and a final presentation meeting towards the end of the assignment. These meetings will all be in the Gauteng area.

This is an exercise in connecting clearly identified dots – summarising and interpreting data – and a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required.  A high degree of discipline is expected, a good salary will be paid along with reasonable travel expenses.

If you believe you are qualified for this task, and you like the idea of spending your year’s end vacation doing something constructive for your country, then send a brief letter of motivation accompanied by an abridged CV/academic record, your address and cellphone number to  the Commissioning Agent at by November 30th, and we’ll let you know ASAP thereafter. If you don’t hear back by Dec 4th your application has been unsuccessful.
